All About the BIB: New Product Size and Packaging
The oil business is steeped in tradition, but that doesn't mean there's no room for innovation! Listening to our customers who love olive oils, we introduced a new product size and packaging a few months ago that stands out from everything else on the grocery store shelf: the BIB.
But what is the BIB?
The word BIB comes from the acronym "Bag in Box." In a nutshell, it is a recyclable plastic bag contained in cardboard packaging and equipped with a practical pouring spout, somewhat like boxed wine. Maison Orphée’s BIB is 1.5 litres in size, the equivalent of three 500 ml glass bottles.
We now offer 3 oils in a BIB format: our extra virgin olive oil delicate, its organic version, and our organic sunflower oil for cooking.
Why is the BIB such an exciting format?
The BIB is a great solution for several reasons.
1. It is more affordable.
As with any product sold in bulk, we can offer you a better price than when you buy individual bottles.
2- It's more eco-friendly.
The BIB is entirely recyclable, except for the cap. But read on!
Glass bottles are manufactured overseas in Europe and Asia. They are heavy and require a lot of energy to transport them to Canada. On the flip side, BIBs are made from lightweight Canadian materials that take up little space in transit.
3- It's more convenient
As soon as you open a conventional oil bottle, contact with oxygen causes your oil to slowly become rancid; you’ll notice that oil will become increasingly pungent. In contrast, the BIB protects its contents from oxygen and light, so your oil stays fresher longer.
Is the BIB plastic safe?
As avid consumers of our own products, this was one of the first questions we wanted to address when we started working on this new format.
The company we work with produces rigorous laboratory analyses. From all the assessments, the plastic bags do not emit any plastic particles into the oil under proper storage conditions, i.e., away from light and especially heat.
Is it possible to have a bigger BIB and more varieties?
We are looking at the possibility of making larger and more diverse formats. However, we need to take a very important step first—with your help! We want to show retailers that this type of format is something you are willing to buy.
For retailers, the 1.5-litre BIB is a fantastic choice because it occupies a similar shelf space to traditional oil bottles. This means retailers can maintain the product layouts they are used to. With larger sizes, special arrangements are obviously required!
